"The Abyss" (originally titled "Hold Your Heart" and "Regular") is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd. It was released on January 31, 2025 as one of the tracks from the artist's sixth studio album, Hurry Up Tomorrow. The song features uncredited vocals from Lana Del Rey.

Background[]

Meaning[]

"The Abyss" tells of the love The Weeknd shares with his partner even though everything around them is crumbling down.

Production & release[]

The track was originally recorded in 2017 for Tesfaye's scrapped album (replaced by My Dear Melancholy), featuring dubstep-like production from Skrillex, and under the title "Hold Your Heart". In 2019, it was re-written and re-recorded for After Hours, this time as a much slower track, although it is unknown who produced it. It ultimately didn't make the cut, however Abel played it during the March 25, 2020 Instagram live, making it also possible it was a cut deluxe track, similarly to "Take Me Back to LA".[1]

The 2017 version was eventually leaked online on June 25, 2022 through leaked.cx, and two years later it'd make a return in the "The abyss gazes also into you…" teaser for Hurry Up Tomorrow.[2] Tesfaye performed the song live during his September 7, 2024 one-night-only in São Paulo, Brazil.[3] Its new title, "Regular" was leaked through a picture of the set list emerging online.[4] However, it was changed for the final release into "The Abyss".

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I tried my best to not let you go
I don't like the view from halfway down
Just promise me that it won't be slow
Will I feel the impact of the ground?
I tried to be something that I'll never be
Why waste another precious hour?
Why waste another precious ounce?
I'd rather leave somewhat of a legacy
Familiar, a thought that's so familiar
Let me close my eyes with denial
Let's end it all, the world's not far behind
So what's the point of staying?
It's going up in flames, I know
Accept now, oh-oh-oh
Woah

[Verse 2]
Just hold my heart, be close to you
Remember how it always beats for you
I'm falling at the speed of light
I'm staring at your shrinking face, don't cry

You know my heart belongs to you
One last time say that you want me too
The only words that gave me life
Now I see you on the other side
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh

[Outro]
Oh, mama, I'll pray
I'm running away
Oh-oh
Hey-hey (Oh, no)
Oh-oh
Hey-hey
Is a threat not a promise? (Mmm)
If you're looking for rage (Mmm, oh)
If you're looking for ragin'
Quiet for days
Baby, running away
Ayy-yeah
Is a threat not a promise?
Is a threat not a promise?
Yeah-yeah
Ah-ha (Oh)
Ah-ha (Oh)
Ah-ha
Ah-ha
Mama, I'll pray
Mama, I'll pray

[Verse 1]
I hold your heart, be close to you
And I don't make you [?], it's true
I hold it now, I feel alive
I'm holding [?] you make it alive
I know you can't belong for you
I know you say “get shot”, it's true
And I know you can't believe my lie
We hold a deeper [?]

[Chorus]
I know you can’t belong to you
I know you can’t belong to you

[Verse 2]
I feel you can't believe your lie
And I can make you can't believe you try
It's hard to hold me close to you
And even though I can't believe its true
Cause I said you go get on you now
Show me the time you go from my
Something for long you feel a while
Somewhere between your love [?]

[Chorus]
I know you can’t belong to you
I know you can’t belong to you

Trivia[]

  • Some lyrics in the demos are nonsensical, making it the possible reason for the song being almost completely rewritten this many times.
  • Tesfaye previously referred to Lana Del Rey as "the girl he sings about" (at least during the Beauty Behind the Madness days), but it is unknown if she portrays that same girl in this song.
